Singapore Transit Visa for Indians

Singapore's Changi Airport is a common connection point for Indian travellers heading onward to Australia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. If Singapore is only a stop on your itinerary rather than your destination, the rules that apply can be different from a standard entry visa — and it's worth checking your exact scenario before you book anything.

Transit Rules Are Not the Same as Entry-Visa Rules

Whether you need a visa to transit through Singapore depends on factors specific to your trip — your itinerary, the airline you're flying, the length of your layover, and how your connecting flights are booked. These conditions can differ from the requirements for travellers actually entering Singapore as their destination. We're deliberately not stating a blanket rule here, because we don't want to give you a general answer that turns out to be wrong for your specific booking.

Don't Assume Visa-Free Transit Applies to You

It's easy to read that Singapore offers transit facilities for some travellers and assume it automatically covers your trip. We'd rather be conservative than wrong: do not assume visa-free or visa-on-arrival transit applies to your itinerary until you've confirmed it against your actual booking — your nationality, connecting airline, layover duration, and whether both flights are on a single ticket can all matter. Confirm your specific scenario with us, or directly with the airline and ICA, before you finalise your booking.

Leaving the Airport Changes Things

If you're planning to leave Changi Airport during a long layover — for a city tour, to rest at a hotel, or just to explore — that generally means you are entering Singapore, not simply transiting through it. Entering the country, even briefly, typically brings you under the standard entry-visa requirements described on our Tourist Visa page, rather than any separate transit provision. If any part of your plan involves stepping outside the transit area, plan for a standard visit visa rather than assuming transit rules will cover you.

Staying Airside for a Short Connection

If your plan is a straightforward same-day or overnight connection where you remain within the airport's transit area the entire time, your requirements may be different from someone leaving the airport — but again, this depends on your specific airline, ticketing, and nationality details, which we're not going to generalise about here. The safest step is to check your exact itinerary against current requirements before booking, rather than relying on general information you've read online.

If You Do Need a Visa

Where a visa is required for your transit — or where you're planning to leave the airport and need a standard entry visa — the application follows the same authorised-channel process as any other Singapore visit visa. See our application process guide and documents checklist. You'll also want to check the SG Arrival Card requirement if you do end up formally entering Singapore.

Check Before You Book

Because transit requirements are itinerary-specific and can change, the most useful thing you can do is tell us your full routing — origin, connecting flight details, layover length, and whether you plan to leave the airport — before you finalise tickets. Contact us with those details and we'll confirm what applies to your trip specifically, rather than a generic rule that might not fit your booking.

Singapore Transit Visa — FAQ

Direct answers for Indian travellers. For anything not covered here, see our full Singapore Visa FAQs page.

Leaving the airport during a layover generally means you are entering Singapore, not just transiting — which may require the standard entry visa rather than transit provisions. Check with us before planning airport-exit activities.

No — these are three different things. The visa is pre-travel permission to enter. The Visit Pass (e-Pass) is granted digitally at the checkpoint when you arrive, with no passport stamp. The SG Arrival Card is a separate, free, mandatory arrival/health declaration submitted online within 3 days before you arrive. You generally need all three at the right stage of your trip.

Processing time depends on document completeness, travel dates, and the authorised channel's current workload. We do not offer a paid express tier and will not promise a fixed number of days — apply as early as practical and keep your documents ready.

Indian passport holders generally cannot file an application directly with Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) — applications are submitted through an authorised visa application channel. We prepare your documents and submit your application through that channel.

Key Terms — Singapore Visa for Indians

Singapore Entry Visa

Pre-travel permission to enter Singapore. Indian passport holders generally need one before travel; it is applied for through an authorised visa application channel, not directly with ICA.

Visit Pass (e-Pass)

Granted digitally at the checkpoint when you arrive in Singapore — emailed, with no passport stamp (since 11 Mar 2022). This is different from the visa itself.

SG Arrival Card (SGAC)

A free, mandatory digital arrival and health declaration submitted online within 3 days before you arrive. It is not a visa and does not replace one.

Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA)

The Singapore government authority responsible for visa and entry decisions. Visa Expertz assists with preparation and submission only — final decisions rest with ICA.

Social Visit Pass

The official term for a tourist/social Singapore visit — covering leisure travel and visiting family or friends.

Short-Term Business Visit

A visit for meetings, conferences, exhibitions, or trade events. Not a work pass — no employment or salary in Singapore.

Authorised Visa Application Channel

Since individuals in India cannot file directly with ICA, applications are submitted through an authorised channel on the applicant's behalf.
